Kate dressed with reluctance for the party. Megan had left an hour earlier with Ashley for a slumber party at another friend’s house, so she really didn’t have a good excuse not to go out with the girls from the hospital even though she would have rather been spending the evening home alone with a good book and a few glasses of wine. The last New Year’s Eve she could recall enjoying had occurred a decade ago. She’d had soft lips to kiss at the stroke of midnight and a reason to be celebrating. She had been in love, for whatever good that had been. Or at least she’d thought that was where she was in her life.

She got to Christy’s just before eight thirty, and they arrived at the party fashionably late not long after nine o’clock. They were sought out immediately by the rest of their hospital clique and did what every group of two or more single women did—gossip and survey the crowd for a potential somebody to lock lips with at midnight. Kate wasn’t the least bit interested in anyone the girls pointed out, although, there was more than one woman in the crowd she’d be pleased to kiss. She suspected Megan was having a much better time than she was with her friends at the slumber party.
